Licensure


The South Dakota State Board of Dentistry regulates Dentists, Dental Hygienists, Registered Dental Assistants and Dental Radiographers.

Dentists and Dental Hygienists:
Applicants may apply for a license in South Dakota by using one of the following license applications:

The Application for New License is for individuals that have passed a patient based clinical competency examination within five years preceding the date of application (i.e. recent graduates of  an ADA CODA accredited dental or dental hygiene school).  Information pertaining to the patient based clinical competency examinations that are accepted can be found below.  Please click on a link below to obtain information specific to that examination.

The Application by Credential Verification is for individuals that are currently licensed in another state and have completed a minimum of three thousand clinical practice hours within the five years preceding the date of application.  If an individual is applying via credential verification, the Board accepts the following patient based clinical competency examinations: CRDTS, WREB, CDCA, CITA, or SRTA.

Please note that dentists must apply for a separate permit to Administer Nitrous Oxide, Moderate Sedation or General Anesthesia and Deep Sedation.

Please note that dental hygienists must apply for a separate permit to Monitor Patients Under Moderate Sedation or General Anesthesia and Deep Sedation or Administer Nitrous Oxide or Local Anesthesia.

Registered Dental Assistants:
Any dental assistant who performs expanded functions in a dental office must be registered by the Board as an Advanced Dental Assistant.

Please note that a Registered Dental Assistant must apply for a separate permit to Monitor Patients Under Moderate Sedation or General Anesthesia and Deep Sedation or Administer Nitrous Oxide.  

Dental Radiographer:
Any dental assistant who takes x-rays in a dental office must be registered by the Board as a dental radiographer.
